Secure Your Home While You're Away

With the kids going back to school, you may be thinking about trying to squeeze in a last minute family vacation, and what a fantastic idea that is! Besides planning out the trip itself, and lining up who's going to come over to feed your cat while you're away, there are some other things you need to think about. Like the security of your home while you're away. While Isla Del Sol is a very safe and secure community, it's always best to practice home security safety no matter where you live. Here are some simple ideas to prevent your home from becoming a target of motivated window shoppers.

Avoid Social Media

Although sharing your vacation plans with family and friends via social media is convenient and exciting, they may not be the only ones paying attention. Others in your network may be looking for information that can provide them with a timeline of when people are away, leaving their homes vacant. Skip the details online until you get home. Plus, you want to be able to enjoy your vacation, so it may be better to spend it looking away from your phone.

Use A Friendly Neighbor

Hopefully, you have made a friend or two who live in the same building that you trust enough to tell about your plans to leave for a bit. Although at the Lake it is common for people to use their condos as vacation homes, there are also many people who live at the Lake year round. If someone who lives in your complex year round, ask if they would kindly watch your place for suspicious activity while you're gone. If you don't feel comfortable asking anyone in your complex, get a friend or neighbor to stop by every now and then while you're away.

Use Automated Lights

Keeping the lights on are a great way to make it look like someone is home even when they're not. However, you don't want to keep the lights on 24/7 while you're away for a few reasons. First, your electric bill will go through the roof. And second, having your house lit up through the night might be a bit suspicious. Instead, it might be a good idea to buy an auto-timed light switch. Plug in a couple of lamps in different rooms into an automatic light switch timer. You can set them to turn them on once it gets dark and off when you would normally go to bed. Just make sure that you find timers with a random setting so the lights don't turn on (or off) at the same time every day that you're gone.

Keep Valuables Out Of Sight

You may be wanting to keep your curtains completely shut to prevent people from peering into your home. However, if having your curtains completely shut for two or more weeks is uncharacteristic of you, then it could be a hint that you are not around. It is better to leave the curtains how you normally leave them and move expensive items, like jewelry or computers out of sight if they're visible from the window. Also, don't advertise any recent electronic purchases. Break down boxes and dispose of them in a way that won't easily be seen by passersby or catch the eye of a theft.

Install An Alarm

If condo security is important to you and you don't want to have to rely on a friendly neighbor or friend, then it may be in your best interest to install a security system. Although it may cost you to install and set up, it will be worth it knowing that your place is as secure as can be when no one is there. Check-ups from friends and family are still a great way to go, but installing a security system will add that extra level of security that you are looking for while away from your condo. Just remember to instruct your neighbor on how to set and cancel the alarm so the police don't try to haul them away!

At Isla Del Sol, our residents' safety is at the top of mind. Because our luxury Lake of the Ozarks condos are located on the island once known as Hawaiian Island, it can only be accessed by the newly constructed roadway and kept safe by a security gate. Tips to Maximize the Space in Your Condo

Moving from a home to a condo can be a very big change. A concern you may come across when considering a condo is that you may be giving up some square footage. But don't worry about not having enough room in your condo for your belongs. If decorated effectively, you can create a beautiful and elegant look while maximizing the use your condo space. Here are some ways to increase your condo living space.

Improve the Lighting
Lighting is a key element in opening up spaces. Allowing natural light inside the room opens up the interior and makes it look larger. If you do not have a lot of natural light, you can add some creative effects using lighting fixtures. With the proper lighting, every room can be showcased. Having curtains that draw completely past the window frame exposes the room to lots of natural light. Mirrors on the wall can reflect this light without taking up extra space and increase the visual appeal of the interior.

Maximize Your Storage Space
There are dozens of places around the home to stow away unused things and cleaning supplies alike. Hanging cleaning supplies like the broom and mop up on the closet wall will allow for bigger items to sit on the ground, like seasonal decorations in a box, or hidden gifts for the holiday season. In the kitchen, hanging a spice rack on the inside of a cabinet will allow room for the wine cabinet you've always wanted but never had room for!

Downsize Your Furnishings
A cluttered floor plan can quickly take up that much needed space. Rather than trying to fit every single piece of furniture you own into your condo, select a few of your favorite pieces of furniture and get rid of the rest. For example, instead of a having a queen sized bed and full size chest of drawers in your guest bedroom, get rid of the chest and install an extra closet bar in the closet to maximize hanging potential, or consider an under the bed storage solution, to open up floor space.

Open up the Bathroom
The bathroom is a great place to add a sense of open space. Instead of a clouded glass door for the shower, swap in a curved curtain. This will give off the impression that the bathroom is much bigger than it actually is. Additionally, add some floating shelves behind the toilet for towels and other bathroom accessories to clear up some counter space.

Use Floor to Ceiling Decor
When deciding to decorate a condo, it's easy to forget everything above eye level. Hanging curtains from the ceiling and running them centered over twice the length of the window will go a long way to changing the dynamic in the room. Hang a TV with a wall mount to eliminate the need for a stand and draw attention away from the ground and up into the wall.

By using these tips when decorating your new condo, you'll quickly realize that even though you may have less square footage, you don't really lose your space. The best condos at Lake of the Ozarks offer a vast and open floor plan for you to decorate and furnish to your heart's desire. Enjoy the perfect view of the Lake in any room, or step out onto the covered terrace and see why these really are the best waterfront condos at the Lake of the Ozarks!

6 Pool Safety Tips to Know and Teach Your Kids

Swimming pools are great places for family fun in the summer. But the fun can quickly come to an end if someone becomes injured or worse because they do not follow pool safety rules or don't know how to swim. That's why this week Isla Del Sol has 6 pool safety tips to ensure that everyone stays safer in and around the water.

Tip #1:
Watch kids when they are in or around water, without being distracted. Keep young children within arm’s reach of an adult. Make sure older children swim with a partner every time.

Tip #2:
Teach children how to swim. Every child is different, so enroll children in swim lessons when they are ready. Consider their age, development and how often they are around water.

Tip #3:
Make sure kids learn how to swim and develop these water survival skills:
  • Step or jump into water over their heads and return to the surface
  • Float or tread water for one minute
  • Turn around in a full circle and find an exit
  • Swim 25 yards to exit the water
  • Exit the water. When in a pool, be able to exit without using the ladder
Tip #4:
Teach children that swimming in open water is not the same as swimming in a pool. They need to be aware of uneven surfaces, river currents, ocean undertow and changing weather.

Tip #5:
Know what to do in an emergency. Learning CPR and basic water rescue skills may help you save a child’s life.

Tip #6:
Establish and enforce rules and safe behaviors, such as “no diving,” “stay away from drain covers,” “swim with a buddy” and “walk please.”

By following these 6 tips and making sure your children know how to swim and understand the importance of following pool safety rules, you'll more easily prevent an unfortunate incident from happening. Keep in mind that while your child may know how to swim, you should never leave your child unattended. Stay close, be alert, and watch your child when near water.

We hope your family has lots of safe and enjoyable days in the water this summer. Isla Del Sol residents have access not only to the amazing pool and sun deck, but a deck overlooking all of it, plus the beautiful lake all the way around our private island.
