Indoor Gardening Tips to Liven Up Any Space

Placing plants in your home or condominium at the Lake of the Ozarks can really add some life to your space. The problem is, sometimes keeping your houseplants alive is not always an easy task. Indoor gardening doesn't have to be a hassle or frustrating. Knowing some tips and tricks can make your indoor gardening experience easier and defiantly more enjoyable. Today, Isla Del Sol would like to share with you some indoor gardening tips.

Plant Watering

Do Not Over Water

Overwatering your plants is often a common killer for houseplants. It is very easy to over water your plants. You should only water your plants when the soil feels dry to the touch. This method works for most indoor plants. However, there are some plants that may need a little more water than others. You should try to do a little research for each plant that you have for specific care instructions.

Water your Plants from the Bottom

Sometimes when you water plants with a cup or watering can, you risk flooding the soil or not reaching the pots plant roots. Instead, water from the bottom. This will allow the roots to suck up the amount of water it needs instead of flooding the top. To do this, use flower pots that have holes on the bottom. It is also helpful if the pot has a plate on the bottom.

Use Ice Cubes

There are two benefits to watering your houseplants with ice cubes. One, the ice cubes melt at a slow rate. This will give the roots and soil time to absorb the water properly. Two, when you use ice cubes you can avoid the water overflowing from the pot. The ice cube method is a great way to water your plants, but you should only use this method for small plants such as an orchid. If you put too many ice cubes in a larger plant, you could risk freezing your plant.

Mist Your Plants

A lot of plants do well if you mist them in addition to watering the soil. This is especially important in the winter months when the air is dry. The mist will recreate humidity, which is what a lot of plants like. To mist your plants, purchase a spray bottle that will allow you to mist instead of spray. When you fill your bottle up make sure to use room temperature water; your plants will not appreciate a hot or cold mist.

Indoor Plant Suggestions

Fern

Ferns typically do well indoors. Ferns thrive in humid climates, so a great place to put a fern is in the bathroom. This is a plant you should mist occasionally. Ferns also do well outdoors in the summer months. If you purchase plant hooks, ferns would be a great addition to the balcony at your luxury lakefront condo at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Your fern needs:

Sun: Sun to part shade
Water: Medium water
Height: 1-5 feet

Zebra Plant

This plant is known for being attractive and it has heavy stripped foliage and yellow flowers. This plant also likes humidity, so this would be another great plant for the bathroom. If you do not want to put the plant in the bathroom, put the pot on some wet pebbles to simulate humidity.

Your Zebra Plant needs:

Sun: Partly shady-full shade
Water: Medium
Height: 4-6 feet

Christmas Cactus

The bright purple and pink tones of the  Christmas Cactus will brighten up any space. The stems are thick flattened segments, which makes them a fun and unique plant to have in your home. Keep in mind after the holidays, this plant requires a rest period before it can bloom in the Spring.

Your Christmas Cactus needs:

Sun: Part Shade
Water: Dry to medium
Height: 0.75-1 feet

Peace Lily

The peace lily is also another easy plant to take care of. This plant does well in medium lighted areas. Everyone seems to love this plant because it produces beautiful pure white flowers that can last for over a month.

Your Peace Lily needs:

Sun: Part shade to full shade
Water: Medium
Height: 1- 6 feet

Create an Inviting Outdoor Living Area This Spring

The weather is getting warmer and potted flowers and plants are most likely starting to spring up at your local home goods and home improvement stores. Finally, you can get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air. By living in a condo at the Lake of the Ozarks, you can use flowers and plants to instantly liven up your space, without having the regular upkeep of a lawn and garden. This is easy to achieve with a little planning with the use of containers. Each unit at Isla Del Sol Condominiums has a large covered balcony to create your own inviting outdoor area. Here are some helpful tips for starting a container garden:

Define Your Space

Decide how you will use your space and how much of the area will be used for your container garden. Consider furniture and ornamental items you may have to incorporate into the space. Define the purpose of the space and it will drive design and plant choices:

  • Will you be entertaining friends or is this your personal oasis?
  • Would you like to plant herbs to create an edible garden?
  • Are you blocking out neighbors to create more privacy?
  • Are there any obstructions, like air conditioners or gutters that cannot be blocked?
  • Is there a size limitation to the area?

Practical Considerations

Once you have defined the purpose of the space, you need to figure out the logistics. Determine how many containers, plants, furniture, and other ornaments you need and how to get them into your space. Think about the weight of the potted plants and flowers, the weather, and the climate in the space. Here are some questions to ask:

  • Do you need permission from your Condo Owner's Association?
  • Do you need a structural engineer to ensure the area can handle the weight of plants, containers, and furniture?
  • Is the area windy?
  • Are there areas in complete sunlight or in complete shade?
  • How will heavy rain or wind impact the items in the space?

Choosing Your Containers

Unlike gardening in soil, where weight and watering restrictions do not apply, weight is the biggest consideration, when planting in containers on a deck or balcony. Consider these options:

  • Choose lighter containers such as fiberglass or plastic.
  • Limit the number of containers you use.
  • Consider how long it will take for soil to dry out using certain containers.
  • Make sure there is a way for the water to drain out.
  • Ensure the water will not drip on a neighbor's deck or balcony.
  • Find a nearby water source or determine if you will be carrying water to the plants.

Choosing Your Plants

Planting flowers and plants in containers can create the same feeling as an in-ground garden, it just requires some planning. Large tropical plants can provide shade and privacy, while herbs, and fruit and vegetable bearing plants most certainly have a different purpose. Colorful flowers will brighten up your space and be a great compliment to any deck or balcony. Make sure to take into consideration expected growth, type of soil, water and sunlight requirements. With a little foresight, creating your own container garden can open up many possibilities.

6 Questions to Ask Yourself When Considering an In-Home Office

Today, working from home has become very common with the advancement of technology. If you work from your Lake of the Ozarks' condo, you may be wondering how to effectively configure your at-home office space. Isla Del Sol Condominiums feature roomy three bedroom units, which can be ideal for finding a dedicated work space. Here are some questions to ask yourself when looking for a potential at-home office arrangement:

1. Do You Need a Private Space?
If your work requires a dedicated space that is quiet or private, you may want an area with a door and location away from the main activity of the home. An extra bedroom that is not utilized is perfect for this situation. This is also ideal if your business requires you to keep confidential information and sensitive files.

2. Can You Share?
With more couples sharing a business and working from home, finding available space for two is challenging. In this case, converting one of the bedrooms into a shared office, so you can keep the other bedroom open for guests is optimal. Small desks set up in opposite corners, and a central location for printers and other devices can save space.

3. Do You Prefer Being Around Others?
Working from home can feel isolating at times and being around others can make you feel apart of the activity. If you can remain focused and block out noise to complete your tasks, you may want a corner of the living or dining area. Even installing sufficient outlets to a covered or screened deck can be a secondary work space as the weather allows.

4. Do You Need Multiple Options?
While it is best to set a designated area for your work space, some people like to have multiple options. You may want to use a kitchen or dining room table in the morning to get your family off to school and work, and then move to a more convenient location for the rest of the day.

5. Do You Want to Write Your Office Space Off Your Taxes?
If you work from home, and it is used as your main place of business, consult a tax professional. You may be able to deduct expenses for the business use of your home. If the use of your home office is merely appropriate and helpful, you cannot deduct expenses for that purpose.

6. Is Your Bedroom a Possibility?
Modern bedrooms can often accommodate desks, bookshelves, and other office essentials. This can be effective for parents who want to work at night. Make sure you have adequate outlets near your computer station and a place for document storage.

Work and Play at Isla Del Sol Condominiums

  • Dust throughout your home thoroughly - including tops of cabinets, ceiling fans, air vents and wall trim.
  • Move and clean behind and under all furniture. Remove cushions and clean beneath them. Spot clean any stains showing up on cushions and throw pillows.
  • Have the carpet throughout your home professionally cleaned. Buff or wax your hardwood floor. Treat your tile floor and clean the grout with a commercial grade cleaner.

Scrub away any spilled food in your oven before running self-clean. Pay special attention to the stove burners to get up any stubborn spills or stuck on food. Scrub down the inside of your microwave.
  • Go through closets, pantries, and shelving and discard anything you no longer need, want or anything that is expired. Organize the rest to make it easier to locate items without searching.
  • Deep clean the bathrooms. Scrub soap scum from shower walls and tubs, faucets, and shower heads. When cleaning the toilet, pay special attention to the base of the toilet and surrounding floor as well.

Get Outdoors at the Lake of the Ozarks This Spring!

Spring is a great time to get outdoors and explore the Lake of the Ozarks, and it'll be here before we know it! There are many things to see and do when the weather is nice. One of the best reasons to buy a condo at the Lake of the Ozarks is that we have so many attractions, within a short distance to Isla Del Sol Condominiums. Take a look at the many spectacular outdoor activities around the Lake:

Photo: Fun Lake
Ha Ha Tonka State Park
In 1909, Governor Herbert Hadley proposed this natural wonder to be the first state park in Missouri, but it wasn't to be until 1978. The area has a number of geological features including a 70 feet wide natural bridge that spans 60 feet and reaches more than 100 feet in the air. The Colosseum is a steep-sided sinkhole measuring 500 feet long and 300 feet wide. There are two caves, which were used as hide-outs by criminals in the 1830's. Tall bluffs tower over Ha Ha Tonka Spring, Missouri's twelfth largest, and discharges approximately 58 million gallons of water daily. Trails and boardwalks make is easy for visitors to experience the tunnels, caverns, springs, and sinkholes.

High on the bluff overlooking the spring is The Castle Ruins. A wealthy businessman from Kansas City purchased more than 5,000 acres in 1903. Unfortunately he died in an automobile accident one year after construction had begun. His son finished building the estate his father had dreamed of, although not as elaborate as originally planned. In 1942, the entire interior was gutted by fire. Today only ruins remain.

Bridal Cave
Centuries ago, The Ozarks were inhabited by Osage Native Americans. They were thought to discover the pristine beauty that lies beneath Thunder Mountain. Local folklore tells of a legendary Native American wedding ceremony held in the early 1800's. Today this magnificent wonderland is called Bridal Cave. In the tradition of the Native American legend, the cave can be reserved as a wedding chapel. To date over 3,000 couples have exchanged vows in Bridal Cave. In 1948, the secret of "Mystery Lake" was officially uncovered and became a protected treasure for generations to come. Guided tours of the cave leave every few minutes and last approximately an hour. Tour guides will lead you through rooms of incredible mineral deposits, giant columns, delicate soda straws, and massive draperies of formations.

Swinging Bridges
The Swinging Bridges of Brumley are an experience not to be missed at the Lake of the Ozarks! They are original suspension bridges located on Swinging Bridges Road off Highway 42. The two bridges are located 1,000 feet from each other and still carry traffic. The Grand Auglaize Bridge was built in 1922 and is 500 feet long with a span of 414 feet. The Mill Creek Bridge was built in 1925 and is 135 feet long with a span of 95 feet.

Bagnell Dam
Photo: Fun Lake
Construction begun on the dam by Union Electric Company (now AmerenUE) in 1929 and was completed in 1931. Although the lake started to fill in 1931, the water did not reach full reservoir for the first time until the spring of 1932. Total cost of the project was $30 million.

At the time, Bagnell Dam was truly an engineering marvel, and dignitaries from all over the country and the world came to see it. More history and information can be found at Willmore Lodge near the dam, and you can view a real-sized turbine, which is how electricity is produced. To this day, the energy Bagnell Dam produces provides millions of hours of recreation for tourists, local residents, and second homeowners.

3 Tips for Protecting Your Boat

Owning a luxury condo at the Lake of the Ozarks means that you can enjoy all the boating opportunities the area offers. If you own a boat, you also need to take some steps to protect your investment. At Isla Del Sol, we have designed our Island complex to protect your boat, and at our beautiful 360-degree condominium complex, we offer slips for sale that can help prevent your boat from damage from wakes and the elements. Here are 3 tips for protecting your boat and making your stay at the lake enjoyable throughout the year.

1. Choose the Best Slip for Your Boat

Choosing a slip for your boat is some of the best protection from the water you can get. The first step is choosing a slip that can hold up your boat. You need to know the boats length, width, and weight when choosing a lift. If there are any doubts, it's probably better to over-specify than to under quote. We can accommodate nearly any size/style of boats. Our slip sizes are: 12x32, 12x36, 14x36, 14x40, and 16x40.

2. Secure Your Boat Properly

If you are out enjoying the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks and decide to stop at one of our local water bars or need to fuel up, there are some tips to help prevent boat damage from the dock. Use two ropes on the bow of the boat, one on each side to stabilize the vessel and prevent it from swaying too far one way or the other. On the stern, use two crossed ropes, going from one side of the vessel to the other side of the slip. When tying the knot onto the slip, use a knot that can be untied quickly but won't come undone on its own, such as a proper cleat hitch knot. Remember to leave enough slack if waves strike, so that the boat can move independently of the dock, without being drug around by the rope.

3. Use Bumpers to Prevent Damage

If your boat is put away for the day or you find yourself at a busy dock for a night of dinner and entertainment, throw some bumpers on the sides of the boat. This just-in-case feature pays for itself in-case of accidents. You can't watch your boat all the time, and should the dock crew incorrectly tie your boat into the slip, it might bump or grind into the slip. Bumpers can help mitigate this damage, possibly saving you in repairs along with preventing accidental damage to the dock!

Isla Del Sol Wants to Protect Your Investment

Our private island condominium paradise wants to make sure that your watercraft is able to stay protected. Utilize our slips to prevent your boat from being damaged. The next time you stay at the Lake's best waterfront condos, come down and look at our docks. We offer 5 different options which can contain sizes from PWCs to 40 ft. watercraft. Come to Isla Del Sol at the Lake of the Ozarks for a great view and a perfect vacation home; stay for the amazing community and private island community!

Check Out these Fun Rainy Day Activities for the Family!

It's looking like we've got quite a bit of rain on its way. And the combination of winter weather and all this rain is putting a damper on things and isn't helping with the cabin fever. While condo living at the Lake of the Ozarks is fabulous most days, being stuck inside can really take its toll on a person's attitude. Isla Del Sol Condominiums has some great solutions to get you out of your rainy-day funk and onto having a happier brighter day, even if the sun isn't shining!

Here are some great indoor activities you and your family can do when it's raining at the lake:

Plan a Family Game Day

Break out those old board games and decks of cards and heat up the competition between your family. Nothing is more fun than sitting around the kitchen table with your family and bantering back and forth about who's "going down" and celebrating small victories together. Friendly competition and delicious snacks will keep your family laughing for hours - soon enough, you'll forget it's rainy and dreary outside because you'll be too busy having fun inside!

Go Camping Indoors

Who says camping can only be done outside? Push your furniture out of the way, and pitch a tent in your living room. While you can't really build a campfire inside, if you live at Isla Del Sol you have a fireplace. You can start it up and pretend to be sitting in front of a campfire while you tell spooky stories and reminisce on previous family camping adventures. Don't worry, you can still have s'mores too! There are plenty of great recipes online you can find to make s'mores in the oven or microwave - so you don't have to miss out on that special part of camping.

Create a Scavenger Hunt

Nobody is too young or too old to participate in a good old-fashioned scavenger hunt! Come up with a list of items throughout your home for your family to hunt for. The first person to find all the items on the list gets to pick a movie and snack for the family to enjoy together. Depending on the age range of your family members, you can make this as easy or as difficult as you want. Put a spin on it - if nobody finds all items within a certain amount of time, then YOU win and you get to pick the movie and snack!

The rain and wintry weather may be here to stay for a little while longer, but with these clever and fun activities you won't have to worry about your family being bored inside. Appreciate the time you and your family have indoors together while it's here. If you live at the best waterfront condo complex at the Lake of the Ozarks, soon enough you'll be making your way to the pool or cruising the lake heading to your next big adventure. At Isla Del Sol Condominiums, you'll experience the ultimate luxury living at the Lake of the Ozarks!

Choosing the Best Lighting for Your Luxury Condo

Our luxury condos at Lake of the Ozarks don't just have the best view of the Lake, they also have the perfect interior to show off your artistic taste! Sometimes the best-placed decor can fall flat and look less like a masterpiece - but it's not your fault! Lighting throughout the condo could be playing a part and making your interior look less than stellar. Let's talk about the different ways lighting can make your home look and feel exactly the way you want it to look.

Yellow Light vs. White Light
There's a striking contrast between the warm yellow glow of a streetlamp and the bright white light of a classroom. Light bulbs are given a color temperature in Kelvin, which then allows you to find what color light bulbs you would like to use in your home. The lower the Kelvin number, the warmer and more yellow the light is and the higher the number, the whiter the light becomes.

Choosing the Right Light Bulbs
When it comes to lighting your home, there are several different bulb options. Incandescent bulbs have been used in America for decades. They emit warm yellow light. Unfortunately, they use much more energy than other bulbs and there have been laws passed to slowly phase these types of bulbs out of production.

Compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) are perfect for bright overhead lighting that is left on for an extended period, like kitchens and hallways. They last 7 - 10 times longer than the incandescent bulbs and are 75% more energy efficient.

Halogen bulbs are more efficient incandescent bulbs and cost slightly more. The benefit that halogens provide is wide area illumination with a yellowish light. These bulbs are not as efficient as CFLs but they are great for lamps and dining room chandeliers.

Light-Emitting Diode light bulbs (LEDs) are some of the best bulbs on the market. If used for just a few hours a day these can last over 20 years! They are incredibly efficient and provide unidirectional lighting, (casting light in one specific direction). LEDs are perfect for highlighting artwork on your walls and track lighting to give a dynamic contrast between shadows and your interior decor.

Lighting Your Second Home
There are 3 types of lighting you'll probably consider for your condo at Lake of the Ozarks: ambient, task, and accent lighting. Ambient lighting is the light that just fills a room and sets the atmosphere. This is considered the room's natural lighting. Task lighting is illumination with a purpose - table lamps, track lighting and closet lights are good examples. Task lights should be brighter than the ambient lighting to help draw a contrast and focus attention on the specified area. Accent lighting highlights a certain space like a wall of art or a bookcase. Accent lights create contrast and enhance the dramatic effect of illumination.
