6 Pool Safety Tips to Know and Teach Your Kids

Swimming pools are great places for family fun in the summer. But the fun can quickly come to an end if someone becomes injured or worse because they do not follow pool safety rules or don't know how to swim. That's why this week Isla Del Sol has 6 pool safety tips to ensure that everyone stays safer in and around the water.

Tip #1:
Watch kids when they are in or around water, without being distracted. Keep young children within arm’s reach of an adult. Make sure older children swim with a partner every time.

Tip #2:
Teach children how to swim. Every child is different, so enroll children in swim lessons when they are ready. Consider their age, development and how often they are around water.

Tip #3:
Make sure kids learn how to swim and develop these water survival skills:
  • Step or jump into water over their heads and return to the surface
  • Float or tread water for one minute
  • Turn around in a full circle and find an exit
  • Swim 25 yards to exit the water
  • Exit the water. When in a pool, be able to exit without using the ladder
Tip #4:
Teach children that swimming in open water is not the same as swimming in a pool. They need to be aware of uneven surfaces, river currents, ocean undertow and changing weather.

Tip #5:
Know what to do in an emergency. Learning CPR and basic water rescue skills may help you save a child’s life.

Tip #6:
Establish and enforce rules and safe behaviors, such as “no diving,” “stay away from drain covers,” “swim with a buddy” and “walk please.”

By following these 6 tips and making sure your children know how to swim and understand the importance of following pool safety rules, you'll more easily prevent an unfortunate incident from happening. Keep in mind that while your child may know how to swim, you should never leave your child unattended. Stay close, be alert, and watch your child when near water.

We hope your family has lots of safe and enjoyable days in the water this summer. Isla Del Sol residents have access not only to the amazing pool and sun deck, but a deck overlooking all of it, plus the beautiful lake all the way around our private island.
