Ready for Some Winter Fishing?

There are many fun activities that you and your family can participate in at the Lake of the Ozarks, including fishing. Although the weather outside may be cold, the fishing is heating up! Lake of the Ozarks has some of the best fishing in the midwest, and winter is no exception. If you own a condo at the Lake of the Ozarks, you can enjoy some of the best fishing in the country, no matter the season.

What You Can Catch

Don't let the cold winter weather keep you away from some of the best winter fishing in the country. While you may think that the water temperatures in January or February are too frigid to catch fish, it is actually one of the best times of the year to catch a number of different fish, as well as some of the biggest fish in the lake. During these months you can find water temperatures averaging between the mid or upper 30s and the low to mid-40s.

Winter is an excellent time to fish for bass by slowly fishing jerkbaits off points or pea gravel banks. However, the months of January and February are unique because you can catch crappie on the same baits that are used to catch bass. The most popular lure to catch crappie and bass is a suspending jerkbaits. Big crappie will be schooled up during these winter months, so it is not uncommon to catch a limit of giant crappie on consecutive casts to a single spot.

How To Find Fish In The Winter

During the winter, most bass anglers will opt to fish the lower end of the lake where the water is clearer and usually warmer than in the other regions. Bass fishing in the Lake of the Ozarks during the winter months is less complex than in other months because it comes down to three baits, which are jerkbaits, jigs and the Alabama rig. However, the trick to a successful bass fishing trip during the winter months is figuring out where the fish are and slowing things down. With the water levels drawn down to winter pool, the main areas to target during these winter months are 45-degree channel banks, secondary points, bluff ends, and transition banks.
