Get To Know Your Neighbors

Getting to know your neighbors can make you feel more comfortable with your surroundings and open you up to people and experiences that you might not get a chance to have on your own.  The Lake of the Ozarks luxury condominiums at Isla Del Sol is a wonderful community full of great people, both full-time local residents and second-home weekenders. Tomorrow, May 30, is Neighbor Day, so here are a few ideas for you to easily get out and meet your neighbors.  These will work whether you live in our beautiful waterfront condominiums at the Lake of the Ozarks or any other neighborhood.

Start with a wave and a smile

Even if you are a little shy, the easiest thing to do is to simply smile and wave a friendly hello from your front door.  This is a simple way to break the ice and let others know that you are approachable. A smile can brighten anyone's day and is quite often contagious.  You are much more likely to strike up a conversation with a happy person than with someone that looks cranky.

Use local amenities

Get out and enjoy what your area has to offer.  You are bound to run into others that live close by.  Isla Del Sol Condominiums offers lots of amenities on our private island for residents to enjoy together.  Swim at the pool, take a daily walk or run around the paths, or even spend a little time fishing or just relaxing on the boat dock.  If you are a pet owner, meet others in the dog walking area.  This works for other communities too.  Visit a nearby park or shop local businesses close by.  People in your neighborhood will be there too.

Throw a party

If you are an outgoing personality that enjoys entertaining, send an invitation to your neighbors to join you for a cocktail party or even a potluck.  You can host it at your home, a local bar or restaurant, a park, or by the pool.  A public spot might make it less intimidating for someone that you haven't met yet.

Start a group or club

Do you have small children?  Start a playgroup for others with kids.  Do you love to read? Start a book club.  Strike up conversations with others when you are out and about.  You are bound to find similar interests with your neighbors, and many may be excited to meet and explore these interests further.

Welcome new neighbors

Take the first step with people that are just moving in.  Send over a "welcome to the neighborhood" note or plate of baked goods.  Offer to show them the fun spots in the area.  If you make them feel welcome, you are one step closer making some new friends.

Be a good neighbor

Being friendly goes a long way, but if you are inconsiderate of the people living around you, all the smiles in the world may never work.  Don't take up their parking spaces.  Don't stay up super late at night making loud, disturbing noises. Basically, treat your neighbors the way you want to be treated.

Try a few of these things, or come up with a few of your own.  Tomorrow simply saying "Happy Neighbor Day" is a perfect conversation starter.  If you let your neighbors know that you are open to a friendship, you have taken the first step in getting to know those living around you a little better.  At Isla Del Sol, we want all of our residents to feel welcome and comfortable in our private condominium paradise.  Every community can benefit from neighbors getting to know each other.

How the Ozarks got a Lake

Isla Del Sol Waterfront Condominiums at the Lake of the Ozarks  is the only island condominium project in this area. To be considered an island, a piece of land must be completely surrounded by water and not large enough to be called a continent.  You probably knew that much already, but have you ever wondered how the Lake of the Ozarks got there in the first place, allowing us to build our private island escape in the middle of Missouri?

The lake was created by the construction of Bagnell Dam, which caused the Osage River to flood into surrounding valleys.  The Union Electric Company out of St. Louis, Missouri started construction in August, 1929.  Nearly two years later, in April, 1931, it was completed.  The lake reached it's spillway elevation a month later on May 20, 1931.

A few interesting facts about the building of the dam are:

  • Building Bagnell Dam was a $30 million dollar project.
  • It created 10,000 jobs, which employed 25,000 workers over the course of the project
  • Workman moved over 900 miles of fence, 32 cemetaries (2,850 graves), and the entire 500-person town of Linn Creek!!
  • During Construction the lake was called both "Osage Reservoir" and "Lake Osage."  It was officially named "Lake Benton" after former Senator Thomas Hart Benton, but it was so popularly referred to by it's location in the Ozarks that the name "Lake of the Ozarks" just stuck.

The Lake of the Ozarks is now the second largest man-made lake in Missouri. At the time of construction, it was the largest in the united states, and one of the largest in the world!

The Osage River, Niangua River, and numerous creeks and streams all contribute to the formation of the Lake of the Ozarks.  It holds over 600 billion gallons of water.  The Lake itself measure more than 90 miles in length, but has over 1,100 miles of shoreline in four different Missouri counties!

This is due to the serpentine shape of the lake, which has earned it the nickname of "The Magic Dragon."  It may take a little imagination to see the resemblance, but it's there.

A wonderful place to learn more about the history of both Bagnell Dam and the Lake of the Ozarks is at Willmore Lodge.  It is the home to the Lake Area Chamber of Commerce in addition to the Bagnell Dam History Museum, and hosts an absolutely gorgeous view of the lake.

You will find our luxury condominiums at the Lake of the Ozarks  near what would be the base of the head/ top of the neck of the "Magic Dragon" here on Google maps off of Knox Road.  You can see beautiful panoramic views of the Lake of the Ozarks from any location on our island.  Visit us today and see just why our private island paradise is just the place to make your Lake of the Ozarks home.
