5 Tips For Keeping Your Condo Safe While You're Away

The holidays are usually spent with friends or family, which means that you may be traveling if they're not coming to you. If you have a Lake of the Ozarks condo that you will be leaving empty for a few weeks this season, check out these tips you can do to keep it a bit secure while you're gone.

1. Use Automated Lights

Keeping the lights on are a great way to make it look like someone is home even when they're not. However, you don't want to keep the lights on 24/7 while you're away for a few reasons. First, your electric bill will go through the roof and second, having your house lit up through the night might be a bit suspicious. Instead, it might be a good idea to buy an auto-timed light switch. It's easy to plug in a couple lamps into different parts of your condo into an automatic light switch timer that will turn them on once it gets dark and off when you would normally go to bed. Just make sure that you find timers with a random setting so the lights don't turn on (or off) at the same time every day that you're gone.

2. Use A Friendly Neighbor

Hopefully, you have made a friend or two who live in the same building who you trust enough to tell about your plans to leave for a bit. Although at the Lake it is common for people to use their condos as vacation homes, however, there are also many people who live at the Lake year round. If someone who lives in your complex live there year round, ask if they would kindly watch your place for suspicious activity while you're gone. If you don't feel comfortable asking anyone in your complex. Get a friend or neighbor to stop by every once and awhile while you're away.

3. Install An Alarm

If condo security is important to you and you don't want to have to rely on a friendly neighbor or friend, then it may be in your best interest to install a security system. Although it may cost you to install and set up, it will be worth it knowing that your place is as secure as can be when no one is there. However, check-ups from friends and family are still a great way to go, but installing a security system will add that extra level of security that you are looking for while away from your condo.

4. Avoid Social Media

Although sharing your exciting plans with family and friends via social media is great, they may not be the only ones paying attention. Others in your network may be looking for information that can help them know when people are away for the holidays, leaving their homes vacant. Skip the details online until you get home. Plus, you want to be able to enjoy your vacation, so it may be better to spend it looking away from your phone.

5. Keep Valuables Out Of Sight

You may be wanting to keep your curtains completely shut to prevent people from peering into your home. However, if having your curtains completely shut for two or more weeks is uncharacteristic of you, then it could be a hint that you are not around. It is better to leave the curtains how you normally leave them and move expensive items, like jewelry or computers out of sight if they're visible from the window.

Keep Your Primary Residence Secure While You're Away

Are you planning on taking an extended trip this winter or a long stay at the Lake this spring or summer? Make sure to protect your primary residence during your trip. The best waterfront condo complex at the Lake has some tips you can follow to make sure that your residence is prepared for your absence.

Avoid Social Media

Criminals often use social media platforms like Facebook to see if people are gone for vacation. To prevent telling prowlers that you're away, don't post anything that states how long you'll be gone, or your location. Save the vacation pictures for when you get back or post them all at once to avoid letting the online world know your house is unoccupied.

Find a Friendly Neighbor

A friendly neighbor is one of the best security measures your home can have. They can stop by to water the plants, check for mail and make sure that your house is still in good standing. Alerting neighbors to your coming absence gives you peace of mind and you have someone nearby your home who can alert you to anything that might happen. Leave a copy of your contact information for anyone watching your home so they can reach you and keep you informed!

Use Automated Lights

Leaving lights on while you go on vacation may sound like a good plan, but between the high cost and suspicious midnight lighting, you could be doing more harm than good. Consider buying an automated light timer that turns on lights around the house at various intervals to emulate your presence while you're gone. This discourages those prowlers from attempting to enter your empty house!

Continue Your Lawn Care

It's easy to tell from an unkept yard that no one has been home for awhile. Leave some cash with that trusty neighbor to hire someone to take care of your lawn while you're away. Also, have your neighbor pick up your mail and any newspapers. Keeping up appearances is the best way to keep your home safe!
