1. Use Automated Lights
Keeping the lights on are a great way to make it look like someone is home even when they're not. However, you don't want to keep the lights on 24/7 while you're away for a few reasons. First, your electric bill will go through the roof and second, having your house lit up through the night might be a bit suspicious. Instead, it might be a good idea to buy an auto-timed light switch. It's easy to plug in a couple lamps into different parts of your condo into an automatic light switch timer that will turn them on once it gets dark and off when you would normally go to bed. Just make sure that you find timers with a random setting so the lights don't turn on (or off) at the same time every day that you're gone.
2. Use A Friendly Neighbor
Hopefully, you have made a friend or two who live in the same building who you trust enough to tell about your plans to leave for a bit. Although at the Lake it is common for people to use their condos as vacation homes, however, there are also many people who live at the Lake year round. If someone who lives in your complex live there year round, ask if they would kindly watch your place for suspicious activity while you're gone. If you don't feel comfortable asking anyone in your complex. Get a friend or neighbor to stop by every once and awhile while you're away.
3. Install An Alarm
If condo security is important to you and you don't want to have to rely on a friendly neighbor or friend, then it may be in your best interest to install a security system. Although it may cost you to install and set up, it will be worth it knowing that your place is as secure as can be when no one is there. However, check-ups from friends and family are still a great way to go, but installing a security system will add that extra level of security that you are looking for while away from your condo.
4. Avoid Social Media
Although sharing your exciting plans with family and friends via social media is great, they may not be the only ones paying attention. Others in your network may be looking for information that can help them know when people are away for the holidays, leaving their homes vacant. Skip the details online until you get home. Plus, you want to be able to enjoy your vacation, so it may be better to spend it looking away from your phone.
5. Keep Valuables Out Of Sight
You may be wanting to keep your curtains completely shut to prevent people from peering into your home. However, if having your curtains completely shut for two or more weeks is uncharacteristic of you, then it could be a hint that you are not around. It is better to leave the curtains how you normally leave them and move expensive items, like jewelry or computers out of sight if they're visible from the window.
