What to Pack for Your Trip to Your Second Home

If you have a second home at the Lake of the Ozarks, you may be curious as to what you need to bring with you when you visit, what you can buy when you get here and what can be kept at the home. Planning a vacation can be overwhelming and the last thing you want to do is leave something important behind. Isla del Sol, the premier island condo development at the Lake of the Ozarks, has created a list to make sure you enjoy your vacation and don’t forget anything you need.

What Can Be Kept at Your Second Home

Your vacation home should be stocked with the bare essentials. A set of towels, linens and kitchens items including: toaster, microwave, dishes, silverware and cookware, should all be kept at the vacation home. You do not want to be lugging a bunch of items you use all the time back and forth. Other items in the kitchen that can be left are spices, frozen foods and other items that have long expiration dates. A set of beach towels can also be left behind to ensure you do not accidentally leave them behind and to also lighten the load a bit. It is also a good idea to keep some cleaning supplies on hand, as well as some paper goods including: toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, tissues, etc. If you have pets, keeping some food and treats for them at the second home, as well as a pet bed, can also make the packing easier.

What Should Be Brought with You

Aside from clothes and toiletries, a majority of the items being brought will be food items that do not have to be refrigerated. If you don’t live far from your second home, you could also bring a cooler with dairy and other refrigerated food items. Packing to visit your vacation home is very different than packing to visit a hotel. Plan your meals ahead, so you will know what kitchen items you will need, if any, to bring from home. If you are having company come with you, make sure you bring enough towels and linens for them. Depending on what activities you plan to do on your trip, you may need to bring additional items as well, such as camping, hiking or water gear.

What Can Be Bought Here at the Lake

Some items you will want to buy once you reach your destination, which can help save space when packing. These items once again will most likely be food related. Depending on how far you are traveling to your vacation home, you will want to buy your refrigerated items such as milk and cheese upon arrival. You can also buy things you need to replenish after past stays, such as the toilet paper, paper towels, etc. mentioned above. It’s easier just to buy those items here than lug them from home and leave here.

5 Tips for Keeping Your Second Home Safe Through the Winter

It's important to make sure your second home at the Lake of the Ozarks is properly protected while you spend the winter away. Not only can the cold weather cause possible damage to your property, but if anything else should go wrong, you'll want to have someone available who can take immediate action to remedy the situation. Here are some things you should have checked in the winter to keep your condo at the Lake of the Ozarks as safe as possible.

#1 - Make sure your pipes are insulated or the water is turned off.

Harsh winter weather can cause condensation and water in pipes to freeze. The problem is that ice expands, causing immense stress on the pipes. This expansion can cause the pipes to burst. Before you leave your condo, double check to make sure your water is either turned off or you have a slow drip into a sink to prevent the water from staying in the pipes and possibly freezing. Insulating your pipes could save your home if the worst should occur.

#2 - Adjust your thermostat for your absence.

Leaving your condo energy efficient in your absence is not as easy as simply turning off the thermostat and walking away for the winter. You'll want to turn the thermostat over to the heat setting, and set it low, around 50°F. This can prevent your home from dropping into freezing temperature, which could lead to property damage.

#3 - Unplug unnecessary appliances from the wall.

Unplug all of your appliances. A report from Springfield, Illinois shows that your fridge consumes anywhere from $7 to $18 monthly. If you're going to be gone for months, this is just wasted energy and money. Additionally, appliances can cause household fires if the power cord is faulty. With no one home, it could be devastating if a fire were to occur.

#4 - Protect your dock slip from ice.

If you've decided to winterize your boat and choose to leave it in the slip, you'll want to take some precautions to ensure your boat is protected from the ice! A de-icer in the water can keep ice from forming around your boat and damaging the hull. Disconnecting batteries from the boat and keeping the cover sealed tight can also help prevent accidental neighbors (pests) from hibernating in your watercraft.

#5 - Hire someone to check on your property.

Several companies around the Lake of the Ozarks offer winter home checking services, all designed to keep your home protected and keep it looking like it isn't empty. You could also make friends with those who stay around your property year round - these neighbors are perfect people to ask to keep an eye on things!

Enjoy your winter away, Isla Del Sol will see you soon!

Winter home checks are an important aspect of owning more than one residence. These checks can be hired out to local companies, friends, or family members. If you are able, you could come by and check on everything once or twice to ensure that everything is exactly as you left it. The last thing anyone wants is to show up at their waterfront condo at the Lake of the Ozarks to find it damaged, flooded, or worse.

The Right Lighting Makes All the Difference in Your Isla Del Sol Condo!

Our luxury condos at Lake of the Ozarks don't just have the best view of the Lake, they also have the perfect interior to show off your artistic taste! Sometimes the best-placed decor can fall flat and look less like a masterpiece - but it's not your fault! Lighting throughout the condo could be playing a part and making your interior look less than stellar. Let's talk about the different ways lighting can make your home look and feel exactly the way you want it to look.

Yellow Light vs. White Light

There's a striking contrast between the warm yellow glow of a streetlamp and the bright white light of a classroom. Light bulbs are given a color temperature in Kelvin, which then allows you to find what color light bulbs you would like to use in your home. The lower the Kelvin number, the warmer and more yellow the light is and the higher the number, the whiter the light becomes.

Choosing the Right Light Bulbs

When it comes to lighting your home, there are several different bulb options. Incandescent bulbs have been used in America for decades. They emit warm yellow light. Unfortunately, they use much more energy than other bulbs and there have been laws passed to slowly phase these types of bulbs out of production.

Compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) are perfect for bright overhead lighting that is left on for an extended period, like kitchens and hallways. They last 7 - 10 times longer than the incandescent bulbs and are 75% more energy efficient.

Halogen bulbs are more efficient incandescent bulbs and cost slightly more. The benefit that halogens provide is wide area illumination with a yellowish light. These bulbs are not as efficient as CFLs but they are great for lamps and dining room chandeliers.

Light-Emitting Diode light bulbs (LEDs) are some of the best bulbs on the market. If used for just a few hours a day these can last over 20 years! They are incredibly efficient and provide unidirectional lighting, (casting light in one specific direction). LEDs are perfect for highlighting artwork on your walls and track lighting to give a dynamic contrast between shadows and your interior decor.

Lighting Your Second Home

There are 3 types of lighting you'll probably consider for your condo at Lake of the Ozarks: ambient, task, and accent lighting. Ambient lighting is the light that just fills a room and sets the atmosphere. This is considered the room's natural lighting. Task lighting is illumination with a purpose - table lamps, track lighting and closet lights are good examples. Task lights should be brighter than the ambient lighting to help draw a contrast and focus attention on the specified area. Accent lighting highlights a certain space like a wall of art or a bookcase. Accent lights create contrast and enhance the dramatic effect of illumination.

There are hundreds of ways to configure your lighting at the best waterfront condo complex at Lake of the Ozarks. Our condos are easy to customize. Bring in your professional art pieces and showcase them like they deserve with our wide walls and tall ceilings. All that's missing is your artistic hand. Call today to discover the perfection that is Isla Del Sol Condominiums at Lake of the Ozarks!

Celebrate 2016 in Your New Isla Del Sol Condo!

2015 has been a great year at Lake of the Ozarks. We've enjoyed a longer than average warm season, and a fantastic summer season. As we welcome in 2016, let's take a look back at some of the biggest events that happened around the Lake area this past year. These events are just some of the great reasons to invest in a second home at Lake of the Ozarks' best waterfront condo complex.

January - Winter Golf

Cold weather didn't scare off golfers at the Lake of the Ozarks! We had 2 person scrambles on the weekends at Deer Chase golf course to keep even the most die-hard golfing fans seasoned and practiced. Winners received $70 in cash split between the 2 person team.

February - Wedding Vow Renewals & the Famous Mardi Gras Pub Crawl

Bridal Cave stays at a cool 60 degrees in the summer & winter, making it the perfect stop for lovebirds looking to renew their vows in the cold winter weather. During February, Bridal Cave offered free vow renewals which included fresh flowers for the bride and a new wedding portrait. Guests also received a lifetime pass to Bridal Cave and a mystery bag full of local discounts!
Each February the Lake also hosts the largest Mardi Gras Pub Crawl - with over 20 bars participating. Lake Locals and all those involved came down for a crazy night of fun and cheer.

March - Jazz Music & Fundraisers

March kicks off the spring season and Lake of the Ozarks begins to stir with excitement as the ice thaws off the docks. The Ozark Jazz Society put on a concert and buffet style dinner for guests at Osage National Golf Resort. The Celebration boat held a dinner Cruise to raise money for Lake Race, and local schools held silent auctions to raise money for project graduation. March was a month for preparation and charity fundraising!

April - Diamond of Dirt Tracks Racing

Lucas Oil Speedway came to life and brought the best regional dirt racers in to compete on the "Diamond of Dirt Tracks". The first 500 fans even received consolation gifts! Lucas Oil Speedway is located in Wheatland, Missouri, and holds racing events throughout the year for various vehicles, on land, and on water!

May - Events Everywhere

May brought the very best out in Lake of the Ozarks, from live music to the 18th Annual Harbor Hop. Locals and guests alike traveled via boat and car to water bars for a chance to complete the best poker hand and win big prizes! Golf tournaments took place all over the Lake's 12+ courses and Memorial Day weekend officially kicked off the summer season for Lake of the Ozarks.

June/July - Different Party Every Night

The summer nightlife at the Lake of the Ozarks was in full swing during the months of June and July. Between Lake Race, Aquapalooza and the nearly endless 4th of July celebrations featuring fireworks, barbeques, and pool parties, it's amazing that anyone found time to sleep!

August/September - Shootout and End of Season Festivities

As the summer season began to wind down, the lake held one of its most famous events, the Shootout! Racers competed on the main channel of the Lake for the title of Shootout Champion. Live entertainment was at an all-time high, with legendary rock bands like Molly Hatchet, Warrant, and Shaman's Harvest taking the stage all around the Lake area, Labor Day weekend festivities, including fireworks, food, and fun, brought the summer to a close.

October - Cruises, Golf, Fishing, and more!

We enjoyed the Fall Harbor Hop cruise, several fundraising golf tournaments, nearly weekly fishing tournaments and a new attraction, the Mecca Pumpkin Patch. The Lake of the Ozarks loves to go all out with Halloween costume contests, trick-or-treating and haunted hayrides. Decorations could be found everywhere, from Hy-Vee Hollow to neighborhood yards.

November - End of fall and Thanksgiving

Lake of the Ozark's brought in over 5000 people to participate in the Lake Stock Fall Crawl. Over 10 bars came together with public transport and gave the area a fun and safe night they won't forget. Many locals and guests celebrated Thanksgiving at the Lake, by dining at local restaurants showing off their chef's talent by offering Thanksgiving Day meals.

December - Christmas and New Year's Celebrations

What began as a small fundraising campaign to ensure that children in the area would have a good Christmas has become an absolute over the top charity event. Live music, auctions, cash bar and more, the Christmas for Kids event has become one of the best reasons to visit or live at the Lake in the off season. With New Year's bringing this amazing year to an end, several businesses are inviting you to help them ring in the New Year! Visit www.FunLake.com for more details!
