Bring the Outdoors In with an Indoor Garden!

When you own a condo at the Lake of the Ozarks, there are numerous perks that come with the purchase of your condo! At Isla Del Sol, we offer several amenities such as private island living, panoramic lake views, lakeside pool, a dog walking area, spacious living, and more! With all of these wonderful amenities, owning a condo is extremely enticing! Even though you'll never have to worry about taking care of exterior maintenance again, you may miss the relaxation gardening gives you. Even though you may not be able to have a huge garden outdoors, you can still put your green thumb to work with an indoor garden at your Lake of the Ozarks condo! Read on for some creative ideas to bring the outdoors in with an indoor garden!

Plant Vertically

Condo living can sometimes mean limited square footage for gardening both indoors and out, so make the most of the space you have by thinking vertically. Fill a bookshelf and decorate it with potted plants. To give your home a little more of an outdoorsy feel, repurpose pallets into wall gardens for your living room. This will not only create a colorful and relaxing environment but will also second as a conversational piece when you have guests over. Include similar potted plants to your end tables to tie it all together.

Add Color!

Add color to all of your rooms by stationing fun potted plants and vases with freshly-picked bouquets of flowers around your condo. Select plants and flowers that tie in with other colors in the room. For example, if you have a favorite piece of art deco displayed in your dining room, and really want to draw out the reds and yellows to make it pop more, place an arrangement of zinnias or roses in an eye-catching yellow planter as your dining table centerpiece. If you have fun patterned throw pillows you want to display in your guest room but are afraid they'll stick out like a sore thumb, create a flow of color that will enhance the pillows by putting a plant of similar color on the nightstand or dresser. In your kitchen, you can bring some outside in by growing your own herbs and displaying them on a window sill or add shelving to store them as part of your decor.

Utilize The Balcony

Why shouldn't your balcony double as a garden? Luckily, our condominiums at the Lake of the Ozarks have a beautiful covered outdoor space. Planters filled with patio, mini or dwarf roses will provide colorful blooms all summer long. Utilize the railings around your balcony to hang planter baskets. This will not only eliminate the use of precious patio floor space but will also create a natural break between your outdoor living room set and your view of the condo complex. For a more easily transferable solution for your patio, you can add casters to your planters for quick and easy mobility.

Bring The Outside In

As you can see there are several ways to implement an indoor garden in your condo. Just remember, the purpose of an indoor garden is to bring the outside in and create a fun and inviting ambiance to your home. Don't forget to care for your indoor plants properly to ensure that they're looking their best at all times. Wherever you choose to show off your plants in your home, you'll want to make sure there's lots of windows and sunlight for ample growth of your plants. If your condo doesn't offer many options for direct sunlight, consider synthetic lighting options. The best part about indoor gardening is the ability to control your plant's environment to produce the most beautiful plants and flowers.

Just because you live in a condo doesn't mean you can't enjoy gardening! The best part about indoor gardening is you can enjoy doing it all year long!  What are you waiting for, now is the perfect time to invest in a condo at the Lake of the Ozarks! We invite you to discover a new path to your island getaway right here at Isla Del Sol Condominiums at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Create an Inviting Outdoor Living Area This Spring

The weather is getting warmer and potted flowers and plants are most likely starting to spring up at your local home goods and home improvement stores. Finally, you can get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air. By living in a condo at the Lake of the Ozarks, you can use flowers and plants to instantly liven up your space, without having the regular upkeep of a lawn and garden. This is easy to achieve with a little planning with the use of containers. Each unit at Isla Del Sol Condominiums has a large covered balcony to create your own inviting outdoor area. Here are some helpful tips for starting a container garden:

Define Your Space

Decide how you will use your space and how much of the area will be used for your container garden. Consider furniture and ornamental items you may have to incorporate into the space. Define the purpose of the space and it will drive design and plant choices:

  • Will you be entertaining friends or is this your personal oasis?
  • Would you like to plant herbs to create an edible garden?
  • Are you blocking out neighbors to create more privacy?
  • Are there any obstructions, like air conditioners or gutters that cannot be blocked?
  • Is there a size limitation to the area?

Practical Considerations

Once you have defined the purpose of the space, you need to figure out the logistics. Determine how many containers, plants, furniture, and other ornaments you need and how to get them into your space. Think about the weight of the potted plants and flowers, the weather, and the climate in the space. Here are some questions to ask:

  • Do you need permission from your Condo Owner's Association?
  • Do you need a structural engineer to ensure the area can handle the weight of plants, containers, and furniture?
  • Is the area windy?
  • Are there areas in complete sunlight or in complete shade?
  • How will heavy rain or wind impact the items in the space?

Choosing Your Containers

Unlike gardening in soil, where weight and watering restrictions do not apply, weight is the biggest consideration, when planting in containers on a deck or balcony. Consider these options:

  • Choose lighter containers such as fiberglass or plastic.
  • Limit the number of containers you use.
  • Consider how long it will take for soil to dry out using certain containers.
  • Make sure there is a way for the water to drain out.
  • Ensure the water will not drip on a neighbor's deck or balcony.
  • Find a nearby water source or determine if you will be carrying water to the plants.

Choosing Your Plants

Planting flowers and plants in containers can create the same feeling as an in-ground garden, it just requires some planning. Large tropical plants can provide shade and privacy, while herbs, and fruit and vegetable bearing plants most certainly have a different purpose. Colorful flowers will brighten up your space and be a great compliment to any deck or balcony. Make sure to take into consideration expected growth, type of soil, water and sunlight requirements. With a little foresight, creating your own container garden can open up many possibilities.
